You want a therapist who is more than just a good listener. Therapy should be a supportive but challenging and dynamic space that opens up new ways of relating to the world. I aim to build a relationship based on trust and honesty to help you develop new skills and uncover opportunities for agency and growth. Clients appreciate the frankness, humor, and authenticity I bring to the therapy space. I see value in deep exploration, but will balance it with attention to opportunities for action you can take now in your daily life. I see clients not as people who are "sick", but rather "stuck." I want to help you get unstuck. My clients have dealt with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, loneliness, family conflict, trauma, relationship and intimacy difficulties, and sexuality concerns. Whether I am working with an individual or couple, I tend to focus on opportunities for more rewarding and authentic relationships. Contact me to set up a free 20-minute consultation call. Email is the fastest way to get in touch with me (dylan(at)transcendchicago.com). I am in Lincoln Square M-Th and Bucktown on Fridays. I currently only have weekday daytime availability.

I feel that much of the work of psychotherapy takes place in the context of the relationship. To that end, I endeavor to create a safe and supportive environment within which a productive working relationship can develop. In this relationship, clients can expect a balance of empathy, respect, and gentle encouragement to do the very difficult work of healing, personal change, and growth. This approach to therapy has enabled me to work successfully with a diverse group of individuals with an array of clinical presentations. As a therapist, I have worked with individuals struggling with issues of identity and life transitions, challenges in relationships, substance abuse, mood disorders, and severe mental illness. While my conceptualization and approach to healing may vary with the needs of the client, my respectful, attentive demeanor remains the same. I bring to the therapeutic relationship, knowledge and experience cultivated through work in a variety of settings (schools, clinics, inpatient psychiatric facilities, outpatient private practice) in a variety of roles (clinician, diagnostician, supervisor, professor) bolstered by an appreciation for the beauty of individual differences.

How often have people told you how responsible or mature you were for your age as a child? Maybe you feel highly impacted by others' emotions or reactions. What's it like to consider that these things may have developed as a means to survive chaos, abuse and neglect? We'll work together to embrace what we feel plague us. There's strength and power in all of these things. I work with clients processing childhood trauma + neglect, those looking to improve their relationship with food + their bodies and clients living with intrusive thoughts, panic and obsessive thinking. Embedded in my therapeutic approach are values centered on Fat Liberation, antiracism, womanism and decentering capitalism. While always incorporating trauma-informed care, we'll use an Internal Family Systems lens to help you better understand yourself & your needs. From there, we might use somatic or exposure therapy to help you heal and welcome change. I show up in the world as a fat, pansexual, Hispanic woman and my identity as a counselor reflects that. I know how powerful therapy can be when you find a good fit! My own therapy journey in healing from an eating disorder, OCD and trauma absolutely transformed my world. As your clinician, I hope to lead you down your own path to peace and self-acceptance.

I help people make their thoughts and feelings more conscious, alive, and manageable. Maybe you are coming to therapy or mediation to make life changing decisions or take urgent action. In my experience, people are best equipped to accomplish those goals when they cultivate enough self-awareness and trust to handle the outcomes of their choices. I work with individual adults, couples, families, and groups from a relational and psychodynamic perspective that incorporates Black diasporic and feminist thought, respect for the body’s role in processing trauma, and family systems theory. I offer curious and active listening, compassion and awe for how hard it can be to encounter yourself, respect for your self-expertise, and a focus on how relationships (esp. the one we will build together) can transform and improve the quality of your life. It would be an honor to get to know you, your partner, and/or your family and to support your process of living more consciously and fully.

My therapeutic focus includes transitions in late adolescence and adulthood, single incident and relational trauma, navigating divorce and post-divorce relationships, and the anxiety and distress that accompany these experiences. I also help mothers and fathers navigate the difficult job of raising children, from infancy through young adulthood, in all types of family configurations. Together, with compassion, we can understand the origins of your distress, what keeps it present in your life, and what changes need to be made to let it go. Our work together may involve exploring past relationships and events to understand their impact on your present life, examining how behaviors you may have developed to help you cope at one point in your life, may no longer be serving you, and developing new ways of coping. In addition to using talk therapy, I'm a certified EMDR therapist. EMDR is a highly effective treatment for trauma that can also help those feeling stuck after trying talk therapy to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, and relationship issues. I am also trained as a yoga instructor and divorce mediator, and can draw on those resources when useful to you.

**Not currently accepting new clients** I believe we are all doing the best we can; lifelong relationships, systemic influences, and personal experiences create patterns, beliefs, and vulnerabilities that are ingrained into our senses of "Self" and ways of being. We all have our own narratives - where we come from, how we got here, what we have been through, and whom we have known - and, usually, it is not something that we chose for ourselves. In therapy, with courage, intention, and curiosity, we can better understand these ways of being, weaving them together by choice to create a life worth living and relationships worth having. View 5 Photos Relationships need trust, safety, & collaboration. My goal is for our relationship to become the conduit through which growth may occur. My approach is affirmative, empathic, & non-judgmental, and is both softly direct & laced with humor. My office can be a place to unload, connect, process, or simply be – it would be a gift to inhabit that space with you. As a MFT, I work with individuals, couples, & families in meeting their therapeutic goals. My specialties include: sexual/gender/relational identity navigation; non-monogamous, polyam, interracial, & mixed-orientation relationships; sexual trauma recovery; building intimacy within couples & families; and confronting/dismantling internalized white supremacy.

Life is not easy. There are constant worries, so much to do while not enough time, and it’s easy to feel lost or alone. Despite wanting to change, many people find themselves stuck, feeling sad, anxious, and lonely. Figuring out how to communicate, feel more connected, and get your needs met in a relationship often takes more understanding of yourself and learning some new skills. Feelings of anxiety, worry, stress, and sadness may signal the need for a change. Navigating change and the mix of emotions is stressful enough; it does not have to be lonely. Sharing the burden and journey of change makes an incredible difference. Comhar is Irish for collaboration or partnership. I view therapy as a collaborative, yet challenging effort through which you and I will examine areas where you find yourself stuck, focusing on how your goals, history, and patterns are impacting your current functioning, while working towards more value-based choices and authenticity in living. Starting therapy can feel daunting. My hope is that therapy offers you the space to explore, learn about yourself, and grow more authentically into the person you would like to be. When you are ready to get help, please submit a request here on Psychology Today or visit my website to book a consultation call and schedule your first appointment.

Folks enter into therapy to examine the internal and external barriers that keep them from cultivating the kind of life they want to lead. Working with a therapist can help you not only recognize the way these barriers impact your life, but help you break through them by utilizing many of the skills and strengths you already possess. Together, we’ll also work to build bridges leading to new skills and strengths, guiding you to the kind of life you truly want to live. My main focus is on creating a safe, supportive and trusting environment where clients can share their story and know that it will be received with positive regard. View 4 Photos I have supported individuals of varying backgrounds including LGBTQIA+ folx, as well as neurodivergent and neurotypical children, teenagers and adults on concerns related to anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues, identity exploration, self-esteem, and life transitions.
